The Old Baba Mandir (one of the sightseeing point our Silk Route Tour Packages) in East Sikkim is not just a temple but a place of deep reverence, patriotism, and faith. Located at an altitude of around 13,123 feet on the way to the Nathula Pass, this shrine is dedicated to Baba Harbhajan Singh, an Indian Army soldier whose story has become a legend in the region.

Who Was Baba Harbhajan Singh?

Baba Harbhajan Singh was a soldier in the Indian Army’s Punjab Regiment. Born in Punjab, he joined the army in the 1960s and was posted in Sikkim, near the Indo-China border. In 1968, during a routine duty near Nathu La, he tragically lost his life after slipping into a glacier.

The Legend and Belief

After his death, fellow soldiers reported experiencing Baba’s presence in their dreams. It is said that he appeared to his colleagues and guided them to recover his body from the glacier. Over time, many soldiers claimed that Baba continued to protect and guide the army even after his passing.

According to local belief:

  • Baba warns soldiers about upcoming dangers, especially near the border.

  • His spirit continues to safeguard the Indian soldiers stationed in the harsh terrain.

  • He is considered a “guardian saint” of the Indian Army in Sikkim.

Because of this deep faith, the Indian Army decided to build a shrine in his honor, which came to be known as the Old Baba Mandir.

Old vs. New Baba Mandir

There are actually two Baba Mandirs in Sikkim:

  1. Old Baba Mandir: Built at the site where Baba’s bunker was located. This is the original shrine and holds a very spiritual and rustic charm.

  2. New Baba Mandir: Situated near Kupup, this was built later and is more accessible to tourists.

While the New Baba Mandir attracts more visitors due to its location, the Old Baba Mandir is still considered the most authentic and sacred site where Baba’s spirit is believed to reside.

Customs and Rituals

  • Baba’s personal belongings like his uniform, boots, and bed are preserved and treated with great respect.

  • Every morning, his bed is found crumpled as if someone has slept in it.
